Glass Edges Explained

Straight Cut

Simply put, a straight cut glass edge is just as when the glass is cut. The edges remain very sharp and should only be used for mounting into some form of frame, so as not to expose the edges at all.

Lightly rubbing your hand along a straight cut edge will result in serious injury.

Arised Edge

Arrised or Arised edge, is the term used when the sharpness has been removed of the glass edge, liked to sanding a piece of wood.

Lightly rubbing your hand along such an edge would not result in cuts or injury.

However, these edges are Not decorative and should only advisidly be used in conjunction with a frame or other such item that would cover the edge.

Polished Edge

A polished edge, is the first of the decorative edges that may be left totally exposed. As the name suggests, these edges have been ground and highly polished to be safe and attractive at the same time.

Polished edged can be applied to almost all mirror shapes, but there are limitations on complex designs

Bevelled Edge

A Bevelled edge is similar to the polished edge for safety but has the added attractive feature of an extra bevel milled into the glass, resulting in an attractive border to the mirrors. Catching the eye by reflecting the light slightly differently around the perimeter of the mirror.

These edges can be applied only to basic mirror shapes, unless a substantial budget permits hand grinding of more complex shapes.

Other considerations when ordering bespoke bevelled mirror from our site, would be the increased time to delivery due to the extra manufacturing processes required.

Pre-Drilled

Pre-drilled, "does exactly what is says on the tin." Each mirror has a series of pre-drilled holes either 5 or 6 mm in diameter, ready to take the correctly size screws for fitting.

The holes are centered 50mm from each edge, or 70mm diagonally from each corner.

Circular and oval mirrors would normally have just two holes, 50mm in from the edge, and along the centre line.

If ordering a heated pad for your mirror, please be aware thet the holes and screws will necessitate choosing a slight smaller heated pad, by at least 100mm in each dimension.
